Why Do You Need a Building Official?

Duty of Care

A key principle of common law is that a local municipality has a “duty of care” to the people who live, work or travel through the geographic area over which the local municipality governs. The Uniform Building and Accessibility Standards (UBAS) Act confirms this duty of care, and gives local governments minimum standards and a framework for dealing appropriately with construction within their jurisdictions.

Administration and enforcement would include enacting a building bylaw, appointing building officials, providing information about compliance with the building code, requiring submission of plans and drawings with building permit applications, issuing building permits, inspecting construction, issuing orders, and initiating prosecution of those who contravene the requirements.

Professional Building Inspections, Inc. (PBI) has over 20 years experience working with RMs, towns and cities to enact building bylaws and enforcing the National Building and Fire Codes through the UBAS Act.

PBI pioneered the “Contracted Building Official” concept over 20 years ago to provide qualified and experienced Building Officials to local municipalities who could not justify hiring their own inspectors.

As Saskatchewan’s largest building inspection firm, PBI currently employs 9 inspectors, three of which are very experienced Class 3 Commercial and Industrial Building Officials. This ensures that someone is available 52 weeks a year for any size of residential or commercial project.

PBI and their Building Officials are appointed in over 100 cities, towns, villages, and RMs across the province. Although their main office is in Emerald Park near Regina, PBI has satellite offices in the North Battleford, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton areas. This facilitates delivering services quicker and often at a lower cost by reducing travel time from the major centres.

All of PBI’s Building Officials are licensed by the Province of Saskatchewan to conduct plan reviews and inspections for ALL of your building inspection needs … from a small residential deck to a large-scale hospital!  Call us today!
